About the Event
Join us for an exclusive private docent tour of the Petah Coyne's current installation at the Lowe Art Museum | University of Miami on Friday, February 20, at 11am. Miami Literary Society Members and their guests are invited to explore contemporary art in an intimate setting, guided by an expert who will provide in-depth insights into the exhibit.
The exhibit is divided into three sections: Women’s Work, Women’s Relationships, and Women Obscured & Transformed. Originally intended as an exhibition organizational structure that avoided the pull of a chronological arrangement, it is now clear that all the works reside in each of the categories, and now these three threads weave and plait together as part of a more nuanced understanding not only of Coyne’s oeuvre, but also how a single artist’s work is intertwined and in dialogue with friends and creatives both near in time and space, and long past or far afield.
Petah Coyne is a voracious reader, and literature has been a major source of inspiration throughout her career. Every sculpture in the exhibition references a work of literature, mostly by women authors.
Because Petah Coyne often responds to Japanese art and culture in her work, the exhibition is complemented by a display of nineteenth-century Japanese woodblock prints from the Lowe's permanent collection. Titled Of Ghosts and Courageous Women, the print display feature stories from ancient Japanese epics and Kabuki plays.
There is no charge for this event. The tour is capped at a maximum of 25 members, please register early to guarantee your place.
